Statute, the Constitution and the Gazette

The section, in its own words.

She gives you the statutory text section by section rather than paraphrasing it, and a long section comes in pages rather than being quietly cut short — which matters, because a proviso dropped from the end of a section is the kind of error you only discover on the other side.

  • 166,000+ Gazette items from 1947 to March 2026 — notifications, rules, orders, circulars, amendments, exemptions and corrigenda — filtered by type, date or issuing authority. Each notification is linked to the Act it was made under, so you can move from a bare “S.O. 1234(E)” to the provision that authorised it.

Ask her which law applied, and she works it out from the date.

Two transitions are live at once — the criminal codes since July 2024, and the Income-tax Act as the 2025 Act takes effect. Put the question to her and she tells you which regime applies, working from the date rather than from today’s statute book. The repealed texts are not in her library; she fetches them and tells you she has. It is worth asking on any matter that crosses the change date, because a section number that reads correctly today may not be the one that governed then.
